Lawang Sewu; Exotism building in Semarang

Lawang Sewu is the building that located in the centre of Semarang city. It’s build between 1904 until 1907 by Nederlands goverment in the colonialization era. In the past, Lawang Sewu was used as Nederlands-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij office. Now, Lawang Sewu is one of historical building in Central Java.

Lawang Sewu have mean ‘thousand doors’. It’s because people in the around of location believe that building have a thousand doors, even in the fact is not. If we see Lawang Sewu from far away, we see this building has many doors. Actually it’s not doors, but windows. Lawang Sewu have many windows as a ventilation system (one of characteristics  Nederlands colonialization building in Indonesia).

Lawang Sewu was design by famous Nederland architect, Prof. Jacob Klinkhamer and BJ. Queendag. This building have three floors, which all of design was adapted by Nederlands architecture style.

After long time Lawang Sewu was careless, now it’s have been renovation. The renovation was finished on July 2011. Now, Lawang Sewu is open by public visitor. This place is nice to visit as a historical tourism in Indonesia.
