Malioboro; Icon of Yogyakarta

Malioboro is a famous as the place in Yogyakarta where you can buy cheap gifts from Yogyakarta. But that is only one reason why people love to go to Malioboro. There are other things that make Malioboro so interesting to visitors. Here you can see the Office of Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta’s Government, Benteng Vredeburg Museum, and the Gedung Agung.

Malioboro's Street

Malioboro has located around 800 m from Keraton or Palace. From north town square we can see Malioboro all along the road start from Vredeburg. It is so easy to get to Malioboro. It is located at the center of the city, that’s why you can get there from almost every place in Yogyakarta with ease. There are many city transportation to choose. Beside that you can find the Tourism Information Center to give you information and direction to go for tourism objects you would like to visit in the area.

Malioboro became an icon of Yogyakarta, many visitors that must to visit Malioboro before they go home. On every holidays and weekends, Malioboro is crowded with people from other cities who love to spend their free time in Yogyakarta. They feel like they are not yet visiting Yogyakarta when they haven’t visit Malioboro.

The history from Malioboro is begun from Chinese people in the Hamengkubuwono I era’s. That time Sultan Hamengkubuwono I appointed a captain from Chinese people.  After Chinese has been thrown out from Kota Gede, they built a place in around post office, and then will be known as Pecinan. In 1916, Pecinan has been crowd and many people that do trading in there. And now Pecinan be famous with Malioboro. The meaning from Malioboro is “Jalan Bunga” or “Flower Street”, because in every celebration from Keraton, Malioboro is full with flower.

Malioboro is a legend. Now it depends on the local businessmen and the tourism agents to develop and make Malioboro better by giving their best services. In Malioboro we can see many things, such as traditional food, batik (Janavese tarditional cloths), bag, etc. Now, in Malioboro is not only sell traditional things, but also there are many modern building like mall, shopping centre, and department store.
