Semeru, Highest mountain in Java Island

Semeru or be known with Mahameru is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia, and also the highest mountain in Indonesia with height about 3.676 meters from sea. This mountain is located in Malang, East Java. For climbing this mountain is taking around 4 days for up and down. Semeru's eruptive history is extensive. Since 1818, at least 55 eruptions have been recorded (10 of which resulted in fatalities) consisting of both lava flows and pyroclastic flows. All historical eruptions have had a VEI of 2 or 3.


There are not only for adventure when people climb this mountain, Semeru offering many things, from the amazing scenery, an adventure when start to climb, etc. There are two beautiful lakes, in the up side is called Ranu Pane and the other one nearby called Ranu Kumbolo, Ranu is mean lake. In the evening, it is very cold to stay here. Its population is about 600, surviving their lives from vegetable agriculture. For the first time, people can’t imagine in the height like that there is beautiful lake.


Climbers forbidden to pass through the southern path because of the poisonous gas and lava path, as an active volcano, Semeru still release of toxic gases and also often experience an earthquake. In the route, we will pass pine forest, field weeds, range of edelweiss and if we luck we can see wild birds and wild cocks. Many tourist local or foreign come to climb this mountain. In the top of the mountain, called Mahameru, We can enjoy an unforgettable and fantastic panorama towards many peaks of East Java, coasts and seas, and sunrise in the east horizon. The climbers must wait an exploded crater to take a picture. Before 9 AM the climbers must leave the peak, because the explosion toward to the peak, bring poison, sand, stone, ash, and dust.
